Graphic Design
Here are just a handful of the many MANY instances of Graphic Design I have produced over the course of my career to date. I produced some of them for full-time employers and others for freelance clients. All were created in Adobe Creative Suite. Two additionally involved NewTek’s 3D application, LightWave. How Graphic Design fits in to UX Design
Some Graphic Designers also do UX. I am a UX Designer who also does Graphic Design. Professional Graphic Designers have plenty to do before ever having to take on anything else: They devote their entire careers to building brands through imagery, color, layout, and typeface. They are masters of the aesthetic and can play a pivotal role in the realm of software by ensuring your app's look-and-feel reflects both your brand and the product's intended purpose.
Professional UX Designers, by contrast, focus on the TOTALITY of your user's experience. A totality that encompasses yes, Visual Design, but also Interaction Design, Information Architecture and Usability. These discrete disciplines interrelate in very specific ways and at key junctures in the SDLC of your digital product. Getting them right can make or break that product.
All that said, I have produced high-quality Graphic Design, especially rich imagery and original illustration. And when considering candidates for your next UX Lead role, you will want someone who understands that particular creative process. Someone who can both produce quality graphics when needed and/or seamlessly integrate another’s work into the most effective overall UX.
